Magabala Books is an Indigenous Australian publishing house. We publish work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creators, including authors, storytellers, illustrators and editors. Although we do consider collaborative works with non-Indigenous authors, there must be at least a fifty per cent contribution or collaboration with an Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or South Sea Islander creator.

Magabala Books is a national publishing house and receives unsolicited manuscripts from throughout Australia. Our publishing list includes a wide range of genres including biography, autobiography, children's, social history, fiction, young adult and philosophy.

All manuscripts that fit within our publishing criteria are assessed by an Editorial Committee and recommendations to publish are endorsed by our Board of Management. Assessment criteria includes:

1. the fulfilment of our objectives as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and South Sea Islander publishers;
2. the quality and/or importance of the manuscript;
3. the perceived market and sales potential.

Magabala Books has a policy of working with Indigenous illustrators only. We recognise the artistic talent and diversity of Indigenous artists and provide opportunities for Indigenous artists to showcase their work through the publication of books.
