Julie Dowling

Julie Dowling comes from a family of sand painters from the people of the middle Gascoyne region of Western Australia. Julie was encouraged at high school by an Indian teacher from the dying days of the Raj. She cut her teeth painting portraits of Gandhi and Bob Marley, and her influences include her uncle who worked in a tattoo parlour. Her formal training came at Claremont School of Art. She then became the first Aboriginal student to major in painting at Curtin University. Her work has appeared in numerous exhibitions including the Adelaide Festival, Perth Festival and Boomalli in Sydney. She has work on display at the Kelton Foundation in Los Angeles and was also featured in a group exhibition in Germany.
