Corrugated Lines: A Festival of Words – Register now

Corrugated Lines: A Festival of Words celebrates Broome and the wider region’s wealth of talent in authors, illustrators and storytellers and showcases a stellar line-up of visiting literary guests.

Magabala Books is proud to partner with Goolarri Media this year to present a selection of events within the Festival program. We’re thrilled to be welcoming visiting creators Kirli Saunders, Elfie Shiosaki, Alf Taylor, Kamsani Bin Salleh, Daniel Browning, Teela Reid and Merinda Dutton, and showcasing the talents of local Broome creatives Brenton McKenna, Scott Wilson, Robert Isaacs and Rachel Bin Salleh.

Whether you’re interested in kids’ storytime, writing and illustration workshops, author in conversations or open mic storytelling, poetry and live music, the 2021 festival has something for everyone.

All of Magabala and Goolarri’s events are free, although registrations are recommended for some.

Friday 30th July

Festival Opening and Local Ghost stories with Goolarri Radio’s Matty J and guests

Enjoy the festival vibe while taking in a talk or workshop. There’ll be coffee, food trucks, chill out zones, a reading corner and the Magabala bookshop. Fun for all the family.

Kids’ Storytime

Settle into a bean bag with the fam as local larrikin Franque Batty reads local titles and entertains our littlest audience.

Artist and illustrators Brenton E McKenna and Kamsani Bin Salleh go head-to-head in a live draw-off hosted by Scott Wilson. All ages welcome.

The Daisy Utemorrah Award – Writing Bindi

Rachel Bin Salleh established the Magabala Books Daisy Utemorrah Award to celebrate and grow First Nations junior and Young Adult fiction. Gunai writer Kirli Saunders was the inaugural winner with her critically acclaimed junior verse novel Bindi.

Together, Rachel and Kirli will discuss the Daisy Utemorah Award, and why writing for young readers matters.

Local writers and festival guests take to the stage to share their latest works. Expect poetry, prose, rap and everything in between. Audience members can also take part, so get there early to sign up on the night.

The Uluru Statement: Stories from the Heart

The Uluru Statement from the Heart was signed in May 2017 by a historic gathering of 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders. Join First Nations lawyer and activist Teela Reid and author and activist Thomas Mayor as they share stories from the movement and discuss what the future looks like.
