Magabala Books hosts first Intergenerational Storytelling Workshop

Mon, Nov 10, 2025

Magabala Books recently hosted an Intergenerational Storytelling Workshop at the Liyarn Centre in Rubibi (Broome), bringing together more than 30 participants (a mix of Elders, emerging writers and young storytellers) for two days of connection, creativity and reflection.

“This workshop opened up new pathways and opportunities for my story to be shared. I’m forever grateful.”

Supported by Creative Australia, Water Corporation, Headspace Broome, and Nyamba Buru Yawuru, the workshop formed part of Magabala’s Intergenerational Storytelling Project. The program creates safe, Culturally grounded spaces for sharing stories across generations — honouring the past while nurturing new voices.

Across two days, participants explored creative storytelling techniques through panels, activities and yarning circles. The workshop was filled with warmth, laughter and a strong sense of pride. Many left feeling connected and ready to keep developing their own creative journeys.

“It’s inspired me to record my family stories, even if there’s no end goal yet. They could be used years later or be kept just for family."

Elders shared memories and Cultural wisdom alongside emerging storytellers who are just beginning to write or tell their stories. Participants reflected on how much it meant to sit in a “Culturally full space of us mob, being safe to share stories and ideas.”

The workshop also sparked conversations about future storytelling pathways and opportunities. Many participants shared their hopes for ongoing learning, on-Country workshops, and mentorship opportunities to keep building their skills and confidence.

“I’ve gained new ideas for my own story and feel connected to my Broome and family story.”

Looking ahead, Magabala will continue to support participants and the broader community through skills development, mentoring and creative opportunities. Future plans include exploring writing circles, professional development sessions, and pathways to publication. This support Magabala's mission to create continued opportunities for Aboriginal voices to be nurtured and celebrated.

Magabala extends heartfelt thanks to all who contributed — participants, facilitators and partners — for creating a powerful space where community, Culture and creativity came together. This is just the beginning of what promises to be an inspiring movement of Kimberley storytelling.
