Re[ad]generate - Kirli Saunders' campaign to regenerate reading in bushfire and flood-affected communities

Wed, May 05, 2021

Magabala Books is proud to support Kirli Saunders' Re[ad]generate campaign supporting children in bushfire and flood-affected communities by delivering books written and illustrated by First Nations authors and artists.

Sparked into action after sharing workshops with teachers from fire and flood affected schools in NSW, Kirli Saunders launched her campaign during Sydney Writer's Festival to regenerate reading in these communities. She aims to raise $10,000 to purchase and deliver books by Blak creatives.

84,000 First Nations Peoples or 1/4 of the Indigenous population of NSW and Victoria live in areas affected by 2019/20 bushfires. These communities were disproportionally affected by floods of 2021. Ever resilient, these communities are rebuilding, but many families are still living in temporary homes, and suffering the long lasting economic, and personal impacts of fire and flood.

As a First Nations woman with family ties to many First Nations Countries harmed by these natural disasters, Kirli Saunders is passionate about supporting students, teachers and families in these areas.

Magabala is proud to be supporting this campaign with sales discounts and distribution support. We know, from reader responses, that our books have the power to heal and reconnect. Kirli Saunders' award-winning Bindi is one such book, a verse-novel that gently portrays a family's experience of bushfire and its aftermath, Bindi reveals the remarkable resilience of young people and the power of Country to help us heal. Help us, gift books like Bindi to communities who need it most.
