Magabala Books acquires follow-up book to 'Dark Emu', 'The European Mind' by award-winning author Bruce Pascoe

Mon, Jun 15, 2026

Magabala Books has acquired the follow-up title to Dark Emu by award-winning author Bruce Pascoe, The European Mind: Colonialism, Capitalism, Christianity & How to Recover.

The European Mind continues the conversation started by Dark Emu and is a powerful global examination of Western power informed by a First Nations perspective. The book contends that European imperialism was not only driven by economic and exploratory factors but motivated by a self-perpetuating belief based on moral superiority, racial hierarchy, spiritual entitlement and an insatiable greed paraded as benevolence and economics.

Pascoe traces how these ideas became a ‘truth’ through which religion, history, myth and storytelling changed the lives of countless peoples, countries and continents through violence, dispossession and environmental exploitation.

Framed by a First Nations philosophy, The European Mind challenges what we think we know about ‘history’ and picks apart beliefs and truths that sit at the heart of our society. Pascoe proposes meaningful change through shifts in cultural and moral thought, the rebalancing of relationships, demolishing the myth of superiority and a rethinking of capitalism as the only system.

Speaking on the importance of The European Mind, Magabala Publisher Rachel Bin Salleh says:

“Time to rethink absolutely everything. History has repeatedly shown us the effects of power, privilege and platform on those who do not have access to nor benefit from its resources. The European Mind reveals to us all how blinded we are by the myth of conquering and the disregard we have for our humanity. We have been groomed by the insatiable cult of capitalism, and need help to survive its legacy. It is time to do things differently.”

Bruce Pascoe says of The European Mind:

“In order to understand where we are we need to know how we got there. Where did capitalism and Christianity spring from and how was their ship, colonialism, constructed? Are those things capable of change? Can we admit the damage they have caused in the countries that service the colonial, the capitalist and the Christian? Do we think inequality of opportunity is collateral damage of western riches? Most of all, how do we save our earth?”

The European Mind releases September 29, 2026.
