Magabala is deeply saddened at the passing of Broome community hero and much-loved musician and educator Guy Ghouse, who passed away on Friday 21 November, at the age of 56, surrounded by his loved ones.
Guy is well-known for his musical talents and received an OAM in June for his contributions to the Australian music industry. His work with long-time collaborator, Noongar songwriter and musician, Gina Williams ensured that thousands of Australians got to hear and appreciate Noongar language.
Magabala published their Noongar songbook Kalyakoorl, ngalak warangka (Forever, we sing) in 2021. The pair won six Indigenous Act of the Year awards at the WA Music Industry Awards and created the first Noongar opera Wundig wer Wilura.
Guy was born in Perth to Malaysian parents and is a third-generation musician. A renowned composer, musical director, producer, and educator, he spent a significant part of his life in Broome and the Kimberely. He is deeply missed by everyone. He was known for his ‘dad joke’ humour, innate cheekiness and fun spirit – a friend to everyone with an amazing smile.
Our thoughts are with Gina, and Guy’s family and friends.
