The 2026 Magabala Pride Fellowship is now CLOSED.

Magabala Books is delighted to partner with Pride Foundation Australia to present the inaugural Magabala Pride Fellowship.

The Fellowship celebrates and supports the voices of LGBTQIASB+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytellers, recognising the power of story to hold identity, culture and truth. The Fellowship provides $10,000 to support a writer or storyteller to dedicate time to developing or completing a manuscript. 

The Fellowship is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers and storytellers working in:

• Fiction (junior, young adult or adult)
• Non-fiction
• Poetry
• Memoir

Please note children’s picture book manuscripts are not eligible. 

Eligibility

To be considered for the Fellowship, applicants must:

• Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
• Identify as a member of the LGBTQIASB+ community
• Be 18 years of age or older
• Reside in Australia
• Be working on an unpublished manuscript
• Be able to outline how the Fellowship would support their writing practice or career

Applicants may submit one application only.

Manuscripts may be written in:

• English
• Aboriginal English
• An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander language
• A combination of these (including bilingual texts)

The manuscript must not be under consideration elsewhere for publication or awards at the time of application.

Ineligible applicants include:

• Employees of Magabala Books
• Board members of Magabala Books
• Employees or board members of Pride Foundation Australia
